A very common question that we get asked is about the weather, and when is the best time of year to get married at This Must Be The Place. Obviously, we have no control over the weather gods, but we can impart the following statistics and bits of advice to help you decide the perfect date for your own wedding.
First up, when you look at weather reports (past, present and future) be sure to look at Moià, and not Barcelona. We are 750m above sea level here, and inland, so it does not get as hot here as it does in Barcelona, and it is no where near as humid. It is usually approx 5°C cooler here, with fresher mountain air.
Month by month, the stats go something like this:
April
We start our season from the second week as that is when we really sense that wonderful Spring-time has kicked in. Plants are growing and buds starting to appear. It’s very pleasant in the daytime with temperatures of approximately 15°C to 20°C (59°F-68°F) and at nighttime they go down to 8-14°C (46-58°F). Sunset at the end of April is around 8:30pm to 8:45pm.
May
Again pleasant, getting warmer with daytime temperatures of between 19°C and 23°C (66-73°F) and nighttime 10-15°C (50-59°C). Sunset at the start of May is 8:45pm end of May 9:15pm.
June
Again pleasant (this is a running theme every month!). The flowers are in bloom and it is getting warmer. 23-27°C (74-80°F) in the daytime and 13 to 18°C (55-64°F) at night. Sunset by the longest day of the year is 9:39pm.
July
Summer is here, it’s a gorgeous time to get married! 25-32°C (77-89°F) in the daytime and 17-21°C (62-70°F) at night. So a few degrees cooler than Barcelona and no where near as sticky. Sunset starts heading back now and by the end of the month is at 9:10pm.
August
Very similar to July, sometimes a little cooler. Come the end of August, sunset is at 8:25pm.
September
Still summery at the start of the month and then starting to feel more Autumnal come the end of the month. Daytime temps of 20-25°C (68-77°F) and nighttime of 14-18°C (57-65°F). Sunset by the end the month is at 7:30pm.
October
Gorgeously Autumnal. The leaves are turning all hues of orange and red – a stunning month here. Daytime temps of 16-22°C (60-71°F) and nighttime of 10-14°C (50-58°F). Sunset by late October is around 7pm.
We tend to recommend that weddings that take place between April and mid-May, and also from late-September into October, are what we call daytime weddings. These would generally start at around 12:30/1pm, to make the most of the warmth of the day.
Weddings in the height of summer – mid-June through to mid September – we recommend to be an evening wedding that would start around 4.30/5pm, to avoid too much exposure to the mid-day sun.
There are graduations between these dates (and start times) though, of course, and ultimately it is always your call. We just try our best to recommend from our experience, to try to maximise the comfort of you and your guests.
A big factor in play here too, is where you choose to host each element of your day – particularly the dinner. If eating the dinner outside in L’Era is a biggie for you, it is better you choose June through to September when nighttime temperatures are consistently higher. But if you’d like to eat in our lovely barns (seating up to a max of about 120 people) this is perfect for the whole season.
A common misconception is that it will be too hot here in July and August. Well, it can certainly be hot then and we’d always recommend that you start later in the day (4.30/5pm) during these months. But it is rarely humid up here, so it is not sweaty/sticky/uncomfortable hot… and you also have a lower risk of rain during these months. We ourselves chose to get married here in July!
Speaking of rain… does it rain here? Of course it does, and we can’t control when I’m afraid. But it rains a lot less often then, say, London. And we have such an amazing plan B – our barns (Els Graners), also most people’s plan A – so we have that eventuality well, err, covered.
